Book Review: The Sleep Solution

The Sleep Solution
Do you ever have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep? Do you take sleep aids, but wonder if they are really helping? Do you find yourself getting less than 8 hours of sleep a night, perhaps because you’re busy and have better things to do?

It is important to recognize that sleep is absolutely critical for health. This is not an area to compromise on. Here is a list of just some of the roles sleep plays in our lives and some of the huge benefits it has:

  • Physical repair and energy
  • Immunity
  • Memory and brain function
  • Hormonal health
  • Reducing anxiety disorders and depression
  • Optimizing metabolism and reducing obesity
  • Insulin regulation
  • Cardiovascular health
  • Greater life expectancy

Do you struggled with any of those areas in your health? How much would your life improve if by simply improving sleep, you could experience relief from your symptoms?

Just popping pills is not enough to improve sleep. You could say “unfortunately,” but I would call it fortunately! Pills can be expensive and have awful side effects, even without considering dependency issues. In reality, the active ingredients don’t truly help your sleep. Even if you sleep for longer, the sleep quality will be lower and it is very common to not feel more refreshed the next day.

Aren’t you glad to know you don’t have to put those chemicals in your body? Aren’t you glad that if you have and they don’t work, that there is a better way?

The Sleep Solution

The best way to improve sleep is to improve your lifestyle. Like many things in health, what you eat and how you live your life will result in much greater health than simply taking medications that only act as a band-aid. Like all lifestyle changes for health, it will take some time and investment to truly implement this “sleep solution,” but it will be totally worth it. Furthermore, while in conventional health, one must take a different medication for every health problem, improving your health through nutrition and lifestyle will affect all areas of your life, not just sleep. True, natural health is actually the cheapest, easiest, and more effective way to lead a healthy life!

To get started, look at your diet and lifestyle. Are you active? Are you eating good, balanced meals? Do you have a lot of stress? Or do you stay on the computer or TV until just before bed? Any number of these factors could be affecting the quality of your sleep.

Emily Benfit of Butter Believer has written an extremely helpful book called The Sleep Solution in order to teach insomniacs how to address these factors and finally sleep well and have more energy. She presents extensive information about why getting enough sleep is important and how sleep cycles work. I found the section about why sleep aids, including melatonin, are not a solution to be particularly enlightening.

In addition to being extremely informative, Emily also details suggestions for behaviors, products, supplements, and recipes to help improve sleep.
