Did you know that the chemicals in commercial makeup can increase the risk of cancer, birth defects, nervous system disruption, immune system dysfunction, and many more negative health effects? Bad news!
Even without knowing that, makeup has never really been my “thing.” I just never got into it. It seemed like too much work to apply every morning. Good way to start selling a makeup book, right? But a big issue for me, and something that kept me from applying makeup even when I could use a boost, was that it can be really bad for your skin. I never saw the logic in using something to cover blemishes that will just give you more. After my transition to chemical free, it made even less sense to put those chemicals on my face. And yet, I found myself wanting to have makeup available, for those days when I wanted a little pick-me-up for my face.
The really scary thing about makeup, though, is that not only is it applied to the skin, our largest organ, but it is applied on and near mucous membranes, and therefore is even more readily taken in by our body. Would you eat your lipstick? Well you do whenever you put it on. Wouldn’t it be nice to have something more natural on your mouth?
Enter Make Your Own Makeup
Make Your Own Makeup is written by Lori Klein of Health Extremist. When it comes to making your own beauty and hygiene supplies, makeup seems to be one of the last things that comes to mind. But not for Lori! She has written this amazing book chock full of recipes for homemade makeup she spent years developing. All from natural ingredients, some edible, and (this is the best part) cheaper than the brands you will find in the drug store. Even better (yes, depending on your opinion, I may have lied about the best part), you can play around with the ingredients to get exactly the color you want!
What you will find
Lori has divided Make Your Own Makeup into sections based on the type of makeup. There are recipes for:
- eye shadow
- eyebrow pencil
- lip gloss, tint, balm and stick
- facial moisturizer
- foundation and primer
- color stick
That’s a lot of categories of makeup! Everything you could need, Lori has multiple recipes for. For example, within the blush category, you can make powder or liquid blush, you can color with beets, hibiscus, berries, or minerals, and she gives instructions for a variety of different shades. All of the recipes are easy to make and many have very easy to find ingredients (and some only have one ingredient!).
This variety of choices and colors can be found through all of the makeup categories. This was particularly helpful in the foundation section, where Lori give recipes for a variety of skin tones with either pink or yellow undertones. She then follows this up with instructions on how to adjust these recipes further to get just the right shade. No more shelling out $30 dollars only to find out your foundation is the wrong shade!
Make Your Own Makeup is an easy to use reference book for all things makeup. Whatever product or color you need, Lori has you covered. She has a concise list of all the products, equipment, and containers you will need, as well as where to buy them. Most importantly, the products work. They really do. In fact, I plan on using some of her make up on my wedding day. How’s that for an endorsement!
Always with the urgency on these book reviews, huh? Well, this book is no different. Make Your Own Makeup retails at $21.95 (less than one container of many makeups), but for a limited time, you can get this amazing book, with over 100 effective, easy, and cheap makeup recipes for just $9.95! That is too good a deal to pass up! But this offer of over 50% off expires September 30, 2013. So buy Make Your Own Makeup today!
