Book Review: DIY Non-Toxic Cleaning Recipes

Many of you have likely heard of Mommypotamus. She is one of the big dogs with whom I am lucky enough to be part of the community that is Village Green Network. She has a brand new e-book out called DIY Non-Toxic Cleaning Recipes. You will probably see a lot of reviews on this book. That is because it is such a huge hit with everyone! No matter what your level of commitment to a chemical-free life, no matter how much time you have or what your budget is, the recipes in this book will make you wish you had it years ago!

DIY Non-Toxic Cleaning Recipes by Heather Dessinger of Mommypotamus

DIY Non-Toxic Cleaning Recipes

To be blunt: modern-day cleaning supplies contain dangerous chemicals. Heather discusses in her book that one of the many chemicals found in cleaning supplies in the United States is an herbicide banned by the EU. Yet the US uses 800 million pounds of it a year! Gross, huh? And the average person has around 700 chemicals running through their body, many of them just as dangerous. These chemicals bio-accumulate and can pass from mother to baby. That is definitely something to avoid!

And yet organic options can be quite pricey, and frequently still contain chemicals to be avoided. So, as I have discussed frequently on this blog, the natural solution is to make natural products!

DIY Non-Toxic Cleaning Recipes by Heather Dessinger is a great resource to do just that. In her book she uses only safe, natural ingredients, and discusses what their purpose is in the recipes. Safe meaning that your kids could eat these products! (they might not be happy about it, but they will be alright)

Curious as to what kinds of products Heather makes? Well, pretty much everything you’ll need for your home! Here are just a few of the recipes you’ll find:

  • DIY Non-Toxic Cleaning RecipesAll purpose cleaners and sanitizers (with essential oils – some that can kill E. coli or MRSA)
  • Goo and gunk remover (finally something to remove those stubborn labels!
  • Produce wash to get rid of pesticides
  • Liquid dish soap
  • Various recipes for getting your dishwasher detergent just right (and why you may have had problems with your old natural detergent)
  • DIY Non-Toxic Cleaning RecipesCleaners for specific surfaces like wood, granite, leather, carpet, and metals
  • Garbage disposal cleaner
  • Dryer balls to reduce static cling and drying time (with our worn out dryer, we definitely need these!)
  • Even a tutorial on how to make your own coconut soap!

Most importantly, though, these products are effective. So ditch the bleach (clove oil is a better mold-killer anyway) and check out DIY Non-Toxic Cleaning Recipes. With her thorough instructions on making, using, and storing these products, you will find making your own cleaning supplies easier than you ever thought (her dishwasher and laundry detergent are even more simple than ones I’ve posted in the past!).

Best of all, you will save money doing it! Scattered throughout the book, Heather gives calculations of cost comparisons between store bought and homemade versions. One example is her streak-free glass cleaner: you can save 11 cents an ounce ($2.79 per 26oz bottle, or over 80%) by making your own!

Reading this book made me want to have my own place so I can make all the recipes and clean everything. I know that you will find it just as exciting!

Don’t Wait!

Sure, this book isn’t going anywhere, but every day you spend buying other cleaning supplies, you are pouring money down the drain. Every chemical you spray in your house is potentially damaging your family’s health. So hurry up and buy DIY Non-Toxic Cleaning Recipes today!
