Phase Six: A Squeaky Clean House, Part 1

Vinegar is magic. That is all you need to know.

Okay, I’ll elaborate. Vinegar is an amazing cleaning tool. If you have vinegar and water, you can clean a lot. We have horribly hard water, but with the help of vinegar, we can get even our stainless steel clean! Once, I was soaking something in the sink, added a little bit of vinegar, and my mom thought I had cleaned the kitchen.

The most basic way to clean with vinegar is to mix a solution of

  • one part vinegar
  • one part water

in a spray bottle. If you would like, you can also add anti-microbial tea tree oil (20-30 drops for every 2 cups). Then just spray and go!

Now, this solution won’t work for everything, such as stoneware and waxed surfaces.  Here’s a good article about that. Also, you will want to alter it slightly for other surfaces.

First off, it does not need to be that concentrated for floors. For floors, you want only

  • 1/2 c vinegar for every
  • gallon water

For toilets, just pour some vinegar straight into the toilet and let it sit while you clean the rest of the bathroom. Then scrub. Those nasty toilet rings come right off!

Finally, I’ll leave you today with a recipe for glass cleaner. There are many more out there for more specific issues and surfaces, but I’ll cover those later. Just remember: vinegar is awesome and it will get your house cleaner than you would expect from one cheap, non-toxic ingredient.

Glass Cleaner:

  • 2 c water
  • ½ c white or apple cider vinegar
  • ¼ c rubbing alcohol

Mix together in a spray bottle. Eco tip: Use old newspapers instead of paper towels. Not only is it less wasteful, but the newspaper won’t leave lint.
