How it All Started

I’ve always been aware that I need to take better care of the earth, but I never knew how. My fiance, Will,  has been helping. Both his parents grew up on farms and now live on an acre of land (huge for where we live), so composting and food from their garden have always been a big part of his life. On the other hand, while my family doesn’t eat off Styrofoam plates every night, we don’t do much more than recycle.

My first big decision was switching from pads and tampons to the Diva Cup last year. This is a big one that scares a lot of people off, so it’s interesting that after making this switch, I didn’t do much more. Earlier this year, Will and I started gathering information about sustainable living, but that was all way in the future. There was nothing we could do now.

Then my mom and I watched the documentary Bag It. It was serious enough that we realized we needed to change our lifestyle, but not so serious that we felt like there was nothing we could do and we were all going to die. We had to make a change, if not for the environment, then for our own health. So I got on the internet and found a recipe for Homemade Shampoo and Conditioner.

Disclaimer for the chemists: I’m a biology major, I took organic chemistry, and I have a lot of chemist friends. I know a lot of you hate the phrase “chemical-free” and I will do my best to not use it. But sometimes that’s just the easiest way to say “natural and free of harmful chemicals that you don’t want in your stuff.”
